Glycoscience NEWS Lesson #16 for 2020

No one knows what this virus is going to do. It would be foolish to think that it will just go away. So much is unknown. A vaccine is as much of a football as the virus itself in predicting which way it will bounce. Futile attempts to help may compound the problem. The Chinese state media is reporting that penalties up to life imprisonment can be handed out to people who sell face masks or goggles which don’t meet national standards.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) went on record today that the coronavirus (COVID-19) is on the “verge” of pandemic if not contained. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH, in an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation” said there are currently 24 countries [outside of China] that have over 500 cases of COVID-19.
The international medical journal Lancet published a study conducted by highly respected epidemiologists from China who demonstrated that several of the original cases did NOT have any contact with the raw food market. So we are not sure where the virus originated. There are too many unanswered questions and China is resisting help from the CDC. Dr. Fauci stated that it really would be helpful if the CDC could be a part of the WHO group on the ground in China.
Senator Tom Cotton, (R) Arkansas, appeared on Sunday Morning Features with Maria Bartiromo, where he flatly stated that what we do know about the coronavirus is that it “Did Not Start at the Wuhan Animal Market.” He added that China’s only bio-safety Level Four Super Lab is just down the road that researches human infectious diseases.
Bill Gates, addressing the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Seattle, said, “This is a huge challenge, we have always known that the potential for either a naturally caused or intentionally caused pandemic is one of the few things that could disrupt health systems, economies and cause more than 10 million excess deaths.” He reportedly called the virus “potentially a very bad situation.” As he was speaking, a news report confirmed a person in Egypt tested positive for the disease. The Gates Foundation has funded $100 million to fight the coronavirus and believes that gene editing and artificial intelligence can save the planet.
On Sunday, a spokesman for China’s National Health Commission said slowing case numbers nationally shows that China is controlling the outbreak.
To win the war with the virus, a different medical approach must be made. The FDA needs to allow toxin-free cures be made available to the public with proven claims.
We cannot continue to just hurl needles at the dart board. Family and government dollars can best be invested in immunology by making the human immune system more battle ready. This can be accomplished with improved glycosylation of glycans and glycoprotein on the cell surface.
