Keep your eyes on Africa!

02/24/2020 – Almost overnight, the Coronavirus skyrocketed in Italy by more than 200 cases. Stocks plunged Monday, with the Dow closing down 1,031 points. World markets fell sharply and fear developed of a coming economic pandemic as viral cases outside China spread. If the coronavirus are not contained, a severe global recession is certain.

In the days ahead, keep your eyes on Africa. Expectations are strong for a coronavirus breakout in Africa. Former Ethiopian health minister, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is director – general of the World Health Organization (WHO). He is racing against time to prevent the outbreak and a worldwide pandemic.

Tedros is seen as the first responder to the world’s public health crises. During the last 2 months, nearly 2,500 deaths have been reported on 4 continents. He has hesitated to declare a pandemic but that may be coming to an end. Especially if new cases appear in Africa as they have in Japan, South Korea, Italy, and Iran.

Potential Impact if Covid-19 hits Africa.

Even without a single case yet, Africa is already a major victim of the virus. Many of the 58 countries of Africa have received investments of billions of dollars from China. The outbreak is weakening the Chinese economy, threatening world economic growth and cutting the need for oil and metals that are the lifelines of the African nations. African developing countries are more dependent on China than before.

The International Monetary Fund and the African central bankers are starting to sound alarm bells as the catastrophe unfolds. The South African Reserve Bank and the Zambian central bank acknowledge negative effects from the virus. These countries sell to China much of their exports in diamonds and copper. The Chinese economy impacts the globe more than in years past.

Director-General Tedros’ job calls for crisis-management and he is holding near daily press conferences and internal meetings on Covid-19, regularly updating the United Nations leadership on the crisis. He has developed direct communication lines with health ministers and leaders in affected countries.

Tedros has the challenge of a delicate diplomatic relationship with the Chinese government because of China’s big investments in many of the 58 countries of Africa, including Ethiopia. Tedros has served as foreign minister and a high-ranking member of its former ruling coalition.

While involved in Ethiopian politics, Tedros helped build China’s influence in the country through investments in railway, hydro power, infrastructure projects along with Ethiopia’s sugar and telecommunication industries. China has invested a reported $24.5 billion into Ethiopia’s infrastructure.

Without question, Glycoscience is the future of medicine and already impacts all healthcare but the public and most health professions are not educated in Glycoscience that provides the solution through immunology.

The virus does not eat, secret, mobilize, or replicate; but, it does have one mission – death. It has one capability with which to accomplish its mission – impregnate its RNA seed into a weak living cell that does not have the strength or ability to resist.

Glycans and glycoproteins protect human cells from harm. Indeed, glycans and glycoproteins are gate keepers of the cell – they keep the enemy out as they form a shield over the cell.

Healthy cells have 800 thousand to 1 million highly active glycans and glycoproteins forming the protective shell.

Glycoscience holds the answer to the battles and the war. This can be accomplished through improved glycosylation of glycans and glycoproteins on the cell surface.
